Pinata cake recipe: It seems like the entire world has been taken up by the roar since the time lockdown has been brought into the picture. Some industries did face some severe consequences, but luckily enough, the baking industry was still put into business because of all the upcoming trends. We saw Dalgona coffee was one thing in which people all over the world showed their interest, and sooner or later came the pinata cake into the picture.

People mostly love to order cake online from some online bakery which would offer them no contact delivery at such times. But since they fear the “what ifs”, they mostly are preferring to take things in their hands and to give a try at baking. Talking of a trending cake-like pinata cake, we have to mention how everyone is looking forward to celebrating their birthdays and other special occasions over this cake in this lockdown 2.0.

A Pinata cake can be described as a shell-based cake that has been filled with some fun treats which are too edible. Remember the time when a pinata or a balloon was tied and suspended which when burst gave us some of our favourite candies and chocolates? This is the original idea behind the pinata cake. The best part about making a chocolate pinata cake is that it requires just two ingredients to make the shell and the inside of such cake can be filled with any kind of fruit, chocolates, candies and other such edible surprises. Here we are with an easy pinata cake recipe , that is worth giving a try.

Let’s Start Making!

  • Start by melting the chocolate until it attains a smooth or lump-free consistency.
  • Pour it into the heart-shaped mould and spread the mixture evenly so that it covers all the edges and sides of the mould.

  • Pour excess chocolate back into the mould and refrigerate the mould for about 10 minutes or so, till the chocolate sets in.
  • Now after the first layer of chocolate has set in, pour some more. And smear it evenly all over the cake mould. If you feel that at any place the layering is thinner, take a pastry brush and even out by applying some more.

  • Then again refrigerate the cake mould for about 10 minutes or so.
  • After this is done, carefully peel out the white chocolate shell from the cake mould.
  • Now decorate the shell, just the way you want. Drizzle it with some chocolate sauce and sprinkle some colourful sprinkles.
  • Fill up the pinata cake with some sweet treats of your choice and let the good times roll for you and your loved ones. Hurray!

Process Of Making Pinata Cake Is Unusual Yet Pleasing

When it comes to baking, you might have noticed that baking a pinata cake is way different from baking regular chocolate or any other kind/flavour of the cake. There’s no such thing as cake layers in such types of cake as well no need of greasing the mould, prior to making the shell of the cake. When it comes to filling the pinata cake, the sky is your limit. You can go as crazy as possible and pick out different candies, chocolates, toffees etc. As you present it to someone, make sure to hand over a hammer to break open the pinata cake and not a sharp knife to cut the cake off. Honestly, that’s the best part of this cake!

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Grease and line the bases of four 20cm/8in cake tins with baking paper.

In a freestanding mixer or a large bowl, cream the sugar and baking spread together until pale and fluffy, using a paddle attachment or electric hand whisk. Gradually add the eggs to the sugar mixture, combining well after each addition. Sift in the flour and baking powder and continue to mix until well combined.

Divide the cake mixture equally between the prepared cake tins and bake for 30–35 minutes, until well risen, golden brown and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for a few minutes before turning out onto cooling racks and leaving to cool completely.

For the buttercream, beat the butter for 5 minutes (either using an electric hand whisk or a freestanding mixer fitted with a paddle attachment). Add the icing sugar in batches, mixing well between each addition. Once combined, add a tablespoon of milk and combine until smooth, adding a little more milk if the buttercream is too stiff. Transfer a quarter of the buttercream to a separate bowl and add a drop of the red food colouring to it. Mix until an even colour, adding more red colouring if a darker colour is required. Leave the other larger bowl of buttercream white.

When the cakes are completely cool, use a large serrated knife to remove any domed tops from the cakes. Ideally the cakes should be completely flat on top. Using a 8–9cm/3¼–3½in round pastry cutter, cut out the centre from three of the cakes (alternatively use a bowl or glass as a guide). The holes need to be in the same place on each cake to create the cavity which will be filled with sweets.

To arrange the cakes, set aside the uncut cake. Place one cake (with a hole in it) on a cake board, stand, or flat serving plate. Top with a layer of white buttercream and jam. Continue stacking the cakes in the same way, until you have three layers of cake on top of each other (each sandwiched with buttercream and jam) and a cavity in the centre. Fill the cavity with jelly beans and place the final layer of cake on top. Ensure the sides are straight and the top is flat.

Crumb coat the cake by spreading a thin layer of the white buttercream all over the sides and top of the cake, using a large palette knife. The whole cake should be covered in a thin, even layer, but it doesn't need to be perfect at this stage. Chill the cake for 15–20 minutes. This will help to seal in the crumbs and make the top coat of icing easier to apply.

When ready, decorate the cake by spreading the rest of the white buttercream all over the cake in a smooth even layer, using a cake smoother or a large pallet knife to get it really smooth (don't worry too much about the top as it will be covered with swirls of pink buttercream later). Arrange the sprinkles around the bottom of the sides of the cake, to come about half way up the sides. Chill for about 30 minutes to set the buttercream.

Place the pink buttercream into a large piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Pipe swirls of pink buttercream all over the top of the cake. Top each swirl with a chocolate shape. Decorate the top of the cake with more sprinkles.

Recipe Tips

Katie decorated the top of her cake with homemade white chocolate lollypops in the programme. You can buy moulds for this from many cook shops, if you'd like to try it. Simply melt the chocolate in a baine marie and then spoon into the moulds. Add a stick and chill until set.

DIY Homemade Pinata Paste with Flour (Cooked Method)

Pinatas can be a very fun craft experience for children. It’s simple to make your own pinata paste with flour. I cook this simple recipe (no fancy cooking skills required, I promise) and use it every time we make a paper mache pinata at home.

What You’ll Need

You’ll need enough flour to be able to mix 5 parts of water for every 1 part flour. It’s easiest for me to use a cup measure and do 1 cup flour with 5 cups water.

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of flour with 1 cup of water until the lumps are gone.

Once the 4 cups of water are boiling, add the separate flour/water mixture to the pot and stir constantly with a silicone spatula while it boils for about 3-5 minutes. The mixture should be smooth and thick like a glue. You can add more flour/water in small amounts if needed to achieve desired consistency. Optional: Add 1-2 Tablespoons of Salt to help prevent mold and stir.

Remove from stove and allow to cool. Once it is at a comfortable temperature, you can use it for your paper mache project.

You can store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator overnight.

How to Serve Pinata Cake:

Place a wooden serving board (like a pizza board). You can use cake board if making it for clients.

Add the fillings of your choice (image 12).

Place the decorated chocolate shell on top with a hammer on the side (image 13-14).

Do remember to tie a ribbon to your hammer to make it special.

I Give You… the Chocolate Overload Piñata Cake

Remember when I showed you guys how to upgrade a store bought cake with sprinkles and cool whip? I love that easy recipe for a quick & fun cake that will totally impress your friends and family.

So much that I decided to take my cake makeover skills to the next level! This chocolate layer cake uses store bought chocolate cake, recycles the filling and frosting and is topped with candy. The best part of the cake is definitely the hidden candy inside!

It’s called a piñata cake because when you cut it open, little pieces of candy, M&Ms in our case, fall out!

SURPISE CHOCOLATE. I mean, all chocolate is good chocolate. But surprise chocolate is the best kind!

I made this celebratory cake for a few reasons:

irst, it was Tony’s birthday and I wanted to bake him an out of this world dessert. And birthday parties are the perfect excuse for a piñata! I also wanted to incorporate all of Tony’s favorite candies into one dessert… so topping a cake with them sounded like the perfect excuse!

Piñata cakes are great for any occasion though. You can put any type of candy inside of them (as long as they’re small), in any color combination. I’ve seen a ton of people use piñata cakes for gender reveal parties. Putting pink or blue candies inside, so that when you cut the cake, you find out whether you’re having a boy or a girl!

They’re so much fun that you don’t need a special occasion to make one! You could even put sprinkles or little toys inside depending on the theme of the party or whoever you’ve invited over to celebrate with you.

Rather than bake the cakes myself and make homemade frosting, I thought it would be fun to show you how you can make a piñata cake at the last minute with all store bought ingredients. That means you don’t need any fancy bakeware, tools or even an oven! You could even make one of these cakes in a dorm room! I know that not everyone who follows along feels super comfortable in the kitchen, so this is a great way to make an impressive (and tasty) cake that will wow your guests!

How To Make A Chocolate Overload Piñata Cake

If you want to make your your own cake and frosting from scratch, go for it! I just recommend baking the cake at least an hour before you assemble it so that it’s cooled and ready to frost.

I also recommend getting all of your supplies & workspace ready to go before jumping in. It will make it a lot easier and keep the mess confined.

Because this “recipe” uses store bought cake and store bought frosting (with a few additional ingredients), it’s SO EASY to make. For real, all you have to do is cut a few holes, fill it with candies & frost it!

Best Piñata Cake Fillings

I used regular M&Ms to fill my cake. Since I went with an overall chocolate theme, I felt like it made the most sense. I also like that the color was pretty much all “chocolate” colored until you cut it open and then had a colorful, rainbow surprise.

Whatever you choose, just make sure that it’s small enough to fit in the hole. The smaller the pieces, the more dramatic it will look when you cut the cake.

Chocolate Overload Piñata Cake Recipe

  • 3 round, store bought chocolate cakes. If possible, find ones that don’t have colorful decorations. It’s also easier to work with them if they’re single layer cakes and don’t already have fillings.
  • 1-2 containers of chocolate frosting
  • 1-2 containers of whipped topping. I use 1 small container per container of chocolate frosting. If you want to make extra, use a 2 containers of chocolate frosting and double the amount of whipped topping.
  • M&Ms for filling the cake
  • Chocolates for topping the cake. I used Reese’s KitKats, chocolate chips, Hershey’s Cookies N’ Creme bars, Rolo’s, Twix & chocolate sprinkles.

What You Need
  • Cake stand or large plate
  • Small cup (this is what you’ll use to cut the hole out)
  • Large knife
  • Spatula or icing knife
  • KitchenAid stand mixer or large mixing bowl

Step One

The first thing you need to do is open your store bought cakes and remove the frosting.

I like using an icing knife to do this, but any knife will work. Just be careful not to break the cake.

Save the frosting you remove in a large bowl or your KitchenAid mixing bowl.

Step Two

In your stand mixer or mixing bowl, you should have a decent amount of frosting from the three cakes. I recommend adding 1 container of chocolate frosting and 1 container of whipped topping (aka Cool Whip or the generic version your grocery store sells). I had just enough frosting for the entire cake. If you’re worried about having enough or want to add more frosting, double the amount of frosting & whipped topping. Adding whipped topping to store bought frosting will make it taste a million times better. It makes it taste a lot creamier and fluffier.

Step Three

After all of the frosting is removed, use a small glass to remove a hole in the center of the cake. I just used a small water glass. You should be able to just push the cup through the cake and it will kind of suction the piece out. If not, you can use a knife to cut around the cup to make your hole.

Repeat this process with all 3 of the cakes. I removed the centers from all 3 cakes and then saved one of the rounds to fill in the top.

Step Four

Place one of the layers (that has a hole removed) on your cake stand or plate. Then, add a layer of about 1/4″ of frosting to the top. Again, I think it’s easiest to use icing knives because they’re kind of like a cross between a knife and a spatula. But you can use whatever you want or have handy.

Then, place the next layer on top (one with a hole cut out). Repeat the process and until all three layers are on.

Step Five

Yay! You get to fill your cake! Gently pour in whatever candy you chose to fill your cake with. Leaving about 1/2 room at the top for the missing round of cake.

Step Six

Put the missing round on top of the cake to fill the hole. Gently push down on it to make it even with the top layer of the cake. If it’s a little off, don’t worry. You can even out the appearance of the cake with frosting.

Step Seven

Frost the cake!! Take your frosting and spread an even layer over the top and side.

Step Eight

Finally, grab candy you want to decorate your cake with! You can use absolutely anything you, your family, your friends, and piñata cake eaters like! The more chocolate the better!

Serving Your Piñata Cake

To serve your piñata cake, just slice right in! When you cut the first piece, the candy you stuffed inside will fall out. You can cut it just like you would any other cake, then use a spoon to scoop up the goodies that fell out!

These Cinco de Mayo Piñata Cookies Come With a Colorful Surprise Inside

If you choose to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the U.S., you absolutely must do it responsibly and respectfully. Honestly, the holiday is way more of a big deal to Americans than it is to Mexicans. The holiday was originally created to honor a battle against the French that took place in Puebla in 1862. The Mexican troops won that battle, but they later lost a second Battle of Puebla to the French. Cinco de Mayo didn&rsquot really gain steam as a holiday in the U.S. until the 1960s, and that was probably just a marketing ploy to sell more beer.

Now, it’s totally fine to celebrate Cinco de Mayo as long as you don’t turn it into a holiday focused on drinking, wearing offensive clothing speaking in silly and rude accents. You can read more about how to respectfully celebrate the holiday here and it’s also important to learn about Mexico’s history with the piñata before you start baking any. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready for the good stuff: baking up some delicious cookies with a colorful surprise inside.

How To Make Cinco de Mayo Piñata Cookies


  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • Mini M&M’s candies
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for the frosting)
  • 2 teaspoons milk (for the frosting)

1. Make the dough

Cream together the sugars and the butter. Beat in the eggs. Add the oil. Combine the dry ingredients, and then gradually add them to the mixture. Mix in the vanilla and almond extract.

2. Color the dough

Split the dough into five even-size balls and one smaller ball (this will be the black one). Add food coloring to each dough ball until your desired color is achieved. Gel food coloring gives you more intense colors than liquid food coloring does.

3. Layer the dough

Use a container the same approximate width of your donkey/burro piñata cookie cutter, and line it with plastic food wrap. Split all your colored dough balls in half (except for the black one), and layer the dough in the container, starting with the black dough on the bottom. Alternate the colors so you end up with two layers of each color by the time you’re done.

4. Wait

Cover the layered dough, and freeze it for four hours or overnight. This is the perfect time to conserve your creative juices for what lies ahead.

5. Bake the cookies

Remove the dough from the container, and unwrap it from the plastic. Cut it into slices of approximately 1/4 inch wide.

Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake at 350 degrees F for 12 minutes.

6. Cut the cookies

Immediately after you take them out of the oven, use your burro piñata cookie cutter to cut the cookie shapes. Working in sets of three, being sure to cut two burro piñata cookies in one direction and one burro piñata cookie in the opposite direction. (Just flip your cookie cutter over.) That way, when you go to assemble them, the finished cookie will look “pretty” on both sides because the baked bottom sides will be hidden.

7. Create the hidden pocket

For the middle cookies in each set, cut off the ears and legs, and cut out the center where the M&M’S will go. I used a small square cutter and made three cuts to get a narrow rectangle. Try to work quickly, because as the cookies cool, they are more likely to crumble or break. Let them cool on the baking sheet before you move them and remove the excess, outer cookie.

8. Assembling the piñata cookies

To assemble, take the first piñata cookie, and lay it upside down so that the baked bottom is facing up. Outline the center of the piñata body with a “frosting glue” mixture of milk and powdered sugar. (I used 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and 2 teaspoons of milk. If you put it inside a Ziploc bag and cut off a tiny tip of the bag’s corner, you can pipe it onto the cookie easily.)

Put the middle cookie on top of the frosting glue, and add the M&M’S to the open center. Put another outline of frosting glue on the middle cookie.

Place the opposite-cut piñata cookie on top (so that the pretty side is facing outward). Let these sit and harden for at least 30 minutes before you stand them upright.

12 Clever Surprise Pinata Cakes

Since they are a super cool cross between a traditional pinata and birthday cake, they are literally popping up all over the internet.

I know I know … Clever surprise pinata cakes look really difficult to make.

But, I promise you that they really aren’t that difficult at all.

As a result, even the novice baker can make a pinata cake to fit their party theme.

Plus, surprise pinata cakes are an awesome way to impress your guests.

Since each one is unique they provide a gorgeous presentation.

So, here are 12 super cool and easy to make clever surprise pinata cakes.

Don’t get overwhelmed by how gorgeous and complicated these beautiful cakes look.

These clever surprise pinata cakes are really quite easy to make.

How To Make A Minion Pinata

Our all time favorite Christmas memory growing up was breaking open a pinata. Our mom would make one every year. That tradition was passed down from our Grandma Char. As little girls we would often help decorate it with crepe paper. Our love of pinatas has grown. We now have them for birthday parties, family reunions, and other family get togethers. Our kids love to see what pinata Grandma will come up with every Christmas. She already knows that next Christmas will be Sponge Bob!

How To Make A Minion Pinata
Items needed:
Rolls of crepe paper in the following colors:
1 sheet of black paper or black card stock (for hands and feet)
4 ounces of Elmer’s glue
cardboard for arms and legs (I used a cut up cereal box)
2 9 inch balloons
10 small balloons (I used water bomb balloons)
12 wooden skewers
6 feet of thick string
duct tape
newspaper cut into 2 x 8 inch strips
hot glue gun with glue stick

Begin by blowing up your balloons. I put the 2 knotted ends of the 9 inch balloons together. Then attach them with the wooden skewers. Just use duct tape to hold it all together. Fill in the gaps with the smaller balloons. I also stuffed newspaper around the small balloons to get the shape of a minion and to fill all gaps.

Then make a flour and water mixture with 1 cup flour to 1 cup water. The water and flour ratio is about equal. Cut the paper into strips and dip them in the flour mixture. Gently wipe off the excess batter and stick the strip of paper onto the pinata. We balance the balloon on a mixing bowl while putting the paper strips on. Cover most of the pinata overlapping the paper strips. After it dries for about 6 hours or overnight you can flip it over and do the other side that was inside the mixing bowl. Be sure to leave a 3 inch opening in one end for putting in the candy.

You will want to do the above step a few times so that you can have a few hard layers that are overlapped. Between layers you can attach string so that it wraps around the bottom of the balloon with the string ends coming out of the top by the hole for the candy. Hold the string in place with little pieces of duct tape. Then just put another layer of newspaper strips dipped in the flour mixture right over the top. It makes it easier to have that in place for hanging it on a pole or stick. You can always just put some holes in the finished pinata to put your string through. Either way works great. After your layers are done and hardened you can pop the balloons inside and pull out all of the sticks, balloons and crunched up newspaper. You will have a hard shell. Then you can draw the face of your minion on your hard pinata shell. Just know that the shell could take a day or two because you need to allow for time for drying.

Now the fun begins. Cut the crepe paper into squares. Twist the end of each piece, dip the end in glue and stick it on the pinata. This is where you get the kids involved.

You may think that it will take a long time, but I would decorate while watching the news or if I had a few minute here or there. Before you know it, he starts taking shape… cute!! For the arms and feet I just free handed them on the cardboard, cut them out and covered them in crepe paper by wrapping it around until covered. The hands and feet can be black cardstock, poster board, or cardboard covered with black paper. For the limbs I parted the crepe paper enough to squirt in some hot glue and stuck in the arms and feet. We also added some little strands of hair on top of his head at the last minute. You’ll see that in the final pictures!

During the summer we hang the pinata from a rope and loop it over a branch so we can raise and lower it while the kids take a swing. During the winter we have grandpa hold it from a long broom stick or pole. The kids are blindfolded and each get a couple of good whacks! It’s so fun! Even the adults dive in for the candy! (Right Jared?) This poor Minion has seen better days!!

How to do it

Part 1

Inflate the balloon, and coax it into a round shape by wrapping it with cloth tape. Set it aside.

Make paste: In a medium bowl, mix 1 cup wheat-paste powder with 4 1/2 cups water. Dip newspaper strips one at a time into the paste, and place them on the balloon, overlapping the strips slightly, until the balloon is completely covered. Let dry overnight. Repeat this process twice more for a total of three layers.

Our pinata design calls for six cones to make them, cut six sheets of strong white paper into 7-inch squares. In a well-ventilated area, spray-mount different colors of tissue paper onto the squares. Place the point of a compass at the corner of one of the squares, and mark a 6 1/2-inch arc. Trim the paper around the edge of the arc. At 1/2-inch intervals, cut 1/2-inch-deep notches into the rounded edge. Roll the paper into a cone, and glue or tape the straight edges together where they meet. Cut 1/2 inch off the tip of the cone to create an opening for streamers. Fold the notches outward, and using craft glue, adhere the cone to the pinata. Repeat with the remaining cones, gluing the first two cones at opposite ends and spacing the remaining cones evenly around the sphere's center perimeter.

For the fringe decoration, begin by cutting tissue paper into narrow strips about 3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. A rotary cutter and a self-healing mat will enable you to cut through several layers of tissue at one time. Fold each strip lengthwise, creating a 1 1/2-inch strip, and cut the strip down the center from the open side, up to within 1/2 inch of the folded edge. Each strip should yield four "fringes." Starting at the bottom of the pinata, glue the strips, fringed edge up, in a tight circle. Glue a second row above the first one (the circle will be slightly larger), tucking the glued portions of the second row behind the fringe of the first. Work your way up the pinata, gluing rows of fringe in circles of increasing size. Glue a couple of rounds of tissue paper over the fringe at the top and bottom of the pinata.

To complete the pinata, use a utility knife to cut a small trap door near the top. Make two vertical cuts 3 inches apart, and connect them with one horizontal cut at the top to create a flap fold the flap back. Using a piece of wire or large needle with a length of strong cord attached, punch two holes at the top of the pinata, and pull the cord through the holes. Knot the cord above the pinata, leaving enough to use for hanging.
