Recipe: Chicken, Rice and Vegetable Homemade Dog Food

H omemade dog food is a great diet for most dogs, as long as you do it properly. Before deciding that you want to make your own dog food, you'll need to have a talk with your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist. This diet isn't for everyone, and your vet will be able to explain the best option for your dog based on his health history.

If the homemade dog food diet is a good option for your pet, you need to be sure to prepare recipes that give him the balanced nutrition that his body requires. Nutritional requirements will vary based on many factors including your pet's size, weight, age and any special dietary restrictions that he may have.

Your vet will be able to tell you the correct amount of protein, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and other dietary requirements that you need to incorporate into your pet's food. For example, puppies need more protein to foster their steadily growing bodies. Senior dogs may require additional supplements for joint health or your dog may benefit from added ingredients for skin and coat health.

If you've decided that the homemade dog food diet is a good option for your Fido, give this recipe a try. Of course, you can adjust it to meet your pet's needs. I made it with chicken, but you could substitute a different protein source if your dog has a sensitive stomach. You could also substitute different dog-friendly vegetables.

Salt – add a little salt & pepper to the broth – but not a lot. You can always add more if necessary but you can’t remove what you already have in the pot.

Chicken Arroz Caldo Recipe

Chicken arroz caldo is a type of Filipino rice porridge with chicken slices. It is best served when topped with hard boiled eggs, some chopped scallions, and toasted or roasted garlic. I personally like to squeeze a piece of calamansi or lime over the toppings. It makes the dish taste fresher and delicious.

This chicken arroz caldo version makes use of glutinous rice (or malagkit). It is the variety of rice that is frequently used to make rice cakes or kakanin such as biko and suman. The previous arroz caldo recipe that I shared is almost the same, except that it asks for regular white rice such as Jasmine.

I find it nice to add kasubha to chicken arroz caldo to give it a yellowish color. However, this ingredient does not influence the taste of the dish. If you want your arroz caldo to have a yellowish color while tasting even better, add Spanish saffron instead. I tried it several times and it always works like a charm.

I can have Chicken arroz caldo anytime of the day, especially when the weather is chilly. The best time that I like to have a bowl of it is during breakfast. I usually have this early in the morning with a couple of boiled eggs and lots of roasted garlic. To me, it is a good meal to start my day.

13. Air Fryer Drumsticks

If chicken is your protein of choice, consider an inexpensive cut like the drumstick. While it does take longer to cook, thanks to the bone, and has more fat than a breast, it's still a healthy option. "More than a third of chicken's fat content is monounsaturated, the same kind of fat found in plant-based fats like olive oil," Rodriguez says.
