The Super Bowl is nearly here and regardless of which team you’re rooting for, if you’re hosting a party you definitely need to be prepared. Rather than scramble to figure out which foods to serve and how to manage your time best, get some advice from people who have taken the heat in the kitchen on more than one occasion.

Famous faces like Andrew Zimmern, Tom Colicchio, and Alton Brown are serving up their tips for a successful Super Bowl soirée, from what to serve to what to have on hand when you're short on time.

Here’s what they had to say:

• To ensure you have all the necessary cooking utensils handy to start cooking, chef and gustatory guru Alton Brown suggests using an apron that will hold anything and everything you might need to prep the meal.

• Host of Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods Andrew Zimmern says it’s important to serve an appetizer that will please all your guests’ palates, such as savory and sweet almonds, cashews, and pistachios.
Ted Allen, host of Food Network’s Chopped, suggests coating ribs and wings in BBQ sauce to ensuring the most flavor and leave a lasting impression with your guests.

• Even though this is a more casual soirée, Tom Colicchio, chef and judge of Bravo’s Top Chef, says it’s still important to use the highest-quality meat in appetizers and main courses.

• When cooking up french fries, fried chicken. or wings, Tom Colicchio says to make sure the oil temperature is constant, which means lighter, crisper favorites, yielding all-around better results

• Self-proclaimed drinking ambassador Zane Lamprey says to make sure you have a football-themed game on hand to play with guests for those who want to take a break from watching the game.

Now that you have the tips, head to our Ultimate Guide to the Super Bowl for everything you need for the big game!

15 things you need to host an awesome Super Bowl party

This year, the Super Bowl pits the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs against one another to see which team reigns supreme. While the players are gearing up for the game of a lifetime, many of us will host Super Bowl watch parties with friends and family to celebrate the football fanfare. And others of us, myself included, are just there for the delicious spread of Super Bowl snacks and dips.

Whatever your cause for celebration on Super Bowl Sunday, throwing an awesome party requires some pre-planning, like making sure you have enough bowls for all of the snacks and, of course, the best soundbar so everyone can hear the game loud and clear.

Super Bowl LIV takes place on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. So, while the party hasn’t started yet, there’s no time like the present to start ordering everything you need to host an amazing Super Bowl party.

Elizabeth Heiskell joined journalist Candace Rose Anderson of the blog Candie Anderson to share the best Super Bowl winning snacks! Photo by Allie Smith on Unsplash

Candie Anderson: With the Super Bowl a week away, do you have any snack recipes you can share with us for the big game?

Elizabeth Heiskell: “Candie, you know me better than that! You know I’ve got lots of snack recipes. We came up with this grazing board. It is like a snack extravaganza. It’s everything that you can possibly imagine or that your guests could ever want. We’ve got beautiful raw vegetables, fruit and charcuterie.

My favorite Farm Rich loaded potato skins – they are scooped out Idaho potatoes, they filled them with great cheddar cheese and bacon. If you like things a little bit spicier we’ve included these jalapeño peppers that have been stuffed with cream cheese that are also divine. All of that is so wonderful dipped in this kicked up ranch dressing that we came up with.

The whole point of this, Candie is to make it super simple, very straightforward and that’s what this dip is. You just take a ranch dip recipe (or you can even buy your ranch dressing if you prefer) add some chipotle peppers to it, mix it up really well and it is going to take your dip to the next level.”

FOOD FUMBLES VS. FOOD TOUCHDOWNS!

Fumble: Buffalo Wings Touchdowns: Chicken Tenders or Buffalo Cauliflower Bites

Chicken wings tend to be a staple during the big game. Typically, wings are fried, doused in sugary sauce and dipped in fatty dressing. One wing can end up totaling 125 calories. Multiply that by 6 wings and you have consumed about half your daily recommended calories in wings alone. Save hundreds of calories by baking or grilling boneless, skinless chicken breast marinated in buffalo or bbq sauce.

Diane Kress’s buffalo cauliflower bites are an excellent substitution for chicken wings! They are low carb, gluten free, rich in fiber and help you to get some extra veggies in during the game!

Fumble: Pizza Touchdowns: Homemade pizza using a cauliflower crust, whole-wheat English muffins or a high fiber tortilla

Whole-wheat English muffins and tortillas serve as a healthier base for your pizzas. They also help with portion control!

Nature’s Own 100% whole-wheat English muffins contain 120 calories and 3 grams of fiber. Split the English muffin in half, toast and top with your favorite toppings (don’t forget the veggies!) for a delicious personal pizza!

La Tortilla Low Carb, High Fiber Tortillas are a great choice. One tortilla is only 50 calories and is packed with 52% of your recommended daily intake of fiber. You can be creative with these tortillas when making your game day favorites like pizza, quesadillas and homemade chips!

Making your own cauliflower pizza crust is a guilt-free way to balance your carbohydrate intake during the game. If you know that you will be eating other carbohydrate rich foods (chips), then skip the added carbs with the conventional pizza and make your pizza on a cauliflower crust! One slice of cauliflower crust (if the pizza is cut into 8 slices) has only 50 calories, 2 grams carbohydrates and 5 grams of protein!

Fumble: Chips & Creamy/Cheesy Dips Touchdowns: Homemade tortilla chips and raw vegetables with Greek yogurt based dips

If you choose to get store-bought chips, opt for baked instead of fried to save you about 30 calories per ounce! My favorite brands of store-bought chips are Snikiddy’s Eat Your Vegetables sea salt veggie chips, Garden of Eatin’ blue corn tortilla chips and Food Should Taste Good tortilla chips. For an even healthier option, make your own tortilla chips at home! Slice whole grain tortillas into small triangles, place on a lightly oiled baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes. Be creative and add seasonings as desired. Once baked, serve with hummus, guacamole, salsa or your favorite dip.

Of course, don’t forget to have some veggies along with those chips! Most veggies have fewer than 50 calories per cup compared to 150 calories in regular potato chips. Baby carrots, celery, snap peas, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, jicama, and bell peppers all taste great plain or with healthy dips!

Dips can be healthy (hummus, bean dip, guacamole, salsa) or they can be calorically dense and filled with fat (sour cream based, eight layer, cheesy dips). Hummus and bean dips can save you calories, but also provide protein and fiber. Sabra Classic Hummus has just 35 calories and less than a gram of saturated fat per tablespoon, compared to nearly two grams of saturated fat in a tablespoon of regular sour cream.

Here are my favorite dips to enjoy with veggies and chips:

    • Chipotle dip – blend together 2 cups non-fat plain greek yogurt, ½ cup salsa and 1 canned chipotle pepper, halved and seeded
    • Honey mustard dip – blend together ½ cup non-fat plain Greek yogurt, 1 ½ Tbsp Dijon mustard and 1 Tbsp honey

Fumble: Pretzel bites and cheese sauce Touchdown: Zucchini fries

Zucchini fries are a great alternative to pretzel bites. This tasty snack will help you increase your intake of veggies. You can skip the dip since they already have such a great flavor!

Zucchini fries – Preheat oven to 425°. Cut 2 zucchini into 3-inch sticks. Whisk 1 egg white in a small bowl, and add ¼ cup milk. Combine ½ cup part-skim Parmesan cheese and ½ cup whole-wheat seasoned breadcrumbs in a separate bowl. Dip zucchini sticks into egg mixture, and then roll in breadcrumb mixture. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray, and place zucchini on sheet. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown.

Fumble: Party mix or candy bowls Touchdowns: Air popped popcorn, steamed edamame, raw nuts or roasted chickpeas

During the game it is easy to be consumed by the action. If party mix and candy bowls are out you may find yourself mindlessly munching throughout the day. Try to be aware of your hunger and fullness cues any time that you are eating. Here are some healthier alternatives to the bowls of party mix and candy:

    • Raw nuts are a crunchy treat with endless flavor combinations
    • Steamed Edamame – prepare a steamer and steam 1 lb whole edamame pods (defrosted if frozen) until hot or about 5 minutes. Once hot sprinkle with 2 tsp kosher salt. For some added flavor add ¾ teaspoon ground ginger, black pepper or other flavors as desired!
    • Air popped popcorn or store-bought popcorn can be a good snack to munch on. Angie’s Popcorn Boom Chicka Pop Lightly Sweet Popcorn has only 120 calories and 4 grams of fat for about 3 ¼ cups of popcorn.

These healthier substitutions for game day favorites won’t leave you feeling tired and guilty, but like a Super Bowl champion!

What are some of your favorite game day foods?

Even if you don’t like the teams playing this year and you vow not watch, come on, you know you will! You don’t want to miss that commercial everybody is talking about on Monday. Not to mention the half-time show! I hope it’s a winner this year!

Living in Wisconsin, I’m a bit bummed that my Packers won’t be in the Super Bowl this year. I’m sure you know by now it’s the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. the Kansas City Chiefs. I have no idea who to cheer for, but you better believe I’ll be watching!

Winter is long in Wisconsin! You gotta do fun stuff to get through it. Normally, I love getting family and friends together for game day parties. This year it will just be a party of two and our dog Arlo watching bit I’m still planning a fun game day spread! When it comes to hosting the Ultimate Super Bowl Bash, I’m kind of an expert. We do game day spreads every Sunday during football season. We eat, breathe, and sleep football! I’ve been throwing tailgate and game day parties since I moved here nearly 30 years ago. You got this! I can help!

Let’s start with the must haves. Every good Super Bowl Party must have some super good dips! My Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip is a WINNER! It’s all the flavor of buffalo wings without all the work. Just throw it all in your crockpot and it keeps nice and warm. That way everybody can dip away when they get hungry. I serve it with lots of celery, carrots and tortilla chips. It’s really good with pretzel crisps too!

Speaking of wings, if you’re making them try it my way. My Baked Buffalo Wings are crispy and delicious, and so much easier and better for you than deep fried!

Don’t forget the cool refreshing dip! It’s so much more yummy when you make your own! My Best Ever Bleu Cheese dressing really is the best! Pick up some bleu cheese and I bet you have everything else to make it.

Cheese balls are also really trending right now! I’m a cheesehead! We love cheese and cheese balls! My Cheddar, Bacon, and Beer Cheese Ball is so yummy! Trust me it’s easy to make too because that’s how I roll! You can easily got the recipe in hald and make a smaller mini football cheese ball.

Really want to WOW everybody? Why not make a Stadium Snack Platter? Even the kids can help build it! And, it’s totally do-able! Click Super Bowl Recipes from The Cooking Mom to watch me assemble one!

You know what they say, “Everything is better with bacon.” I agree! Make bacon part of your game day spread! My Sweet Little Pigs are always a hit! Make plenty! They are always the first to go! My Layered BLT Dip is really good too!

Brats are also a game day party must! I have a secret way to do them so that I don’t have to be manning or in my case “womaning” the grill the whole game. That’s no fun! My Brat Tub recipe keeps those brats nice and cozy in beer, butter, onions, and kraut. Oh yeah! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! You can create this tub in your slow cooker too!

Speaking of brats, you gotta make my Brat Bundles! Cheesy brats wrapped in crescent roll dough served with spicy mustard for dipping. These will get devoured!

I’ve got one more for you. When the New York Times was looking for the Ultimate Tailgate recipes, I knew I had a winner! I submitted my Sausage and Cheese Chowder. Yep, they agreed! It’s one of my all-time FAVES! Just throw it all in the slow cooker. It’s one of those just-dump-it-in recipes. Sausage, cheese, potatoes, and beer! What’s not to love? I serve it with chopped green onions, extra shredded cheddar cheese, and croutons. When my gang is hungry they can just ladle this cheesy goodness into bowls and pile on the fixin’s!

Chili Bars are a fun way to go too! My Ranch Chili and Way Too Easy White Chicken Chili can all be made ahead. Set them out on your kitchen island or table with loads of chili fixin’s and let everybody just dive in when they are hungry.

Finally, a big messy sandwich is mandatory! From my Hot Italian Beef Sandwiches, Sloppy Joes for a Crowd, Hot Beef, BBQ Beef, Slow Cooker Meatball Subs, French Dips, or my Apple Bourbon Pulled Pork, they are all perfect for your Super Bowl bash! I love all these recipes because you can just throw them together in your slow cooker Sunday morning or even Saturday night! Put out some great buns and let everybody make their sandwiches when they get hungry. I can just sit on the couch and enjoy the game, the party and the food!

Sliders are super fun and trendy too! I love them because they are so darn cute and you can eat more than one! Oh yeah! LOVE that! From my classic Ham and Cheese Sliders to Bacon, Roast Beef and Swiss Cheese Sliders! If you like cheeseburgers, you’ll love my Cheeseburger Sliders! They are AMAZING and so much easier than flipping burgers the whole game!

The icing on the cake is a fun game day themed dessert! Why not have the kids help make and decorate a Football Field Cake?

Or, turn a boxed brownie mx into something really special! How cute are my Football Brownies! No cookie cutter required!

No time to bake? No worries! How ’bout whipping up my Cookies and Cream Cheese Ball! It’s a dessert dip that’s crazy easy and so good! Shape it into a football and cover it with chocolate jimmies. Now, pipe on the laces with some white frosting and you’ll look like a total rock star! Serve it with pretzels, cookies and even fresh fruit for dipping. What fun! Makes a great game day centerpiece too!

Here’s hoping for a great game! Great commercials, a fun half-time show and some super good memories! I always say it’s not about just cooking up food! It’s all about cooking up memories! I want to know what you’re cookin’! Please share!

    Super Bowl Party Cooking Tools:

Hamilton Beach Set &lsquon Forget Programmable Slow Cooker (6-Quart): Okay, this one I absolutely CAN vouch for. I love this slow cooker. The insert is ceramic and you can put it in the dishwasher. The lid can be secured to the base and it has a sturdy handle for transport to potlucks. We got this one by chance, but when I did research for a new one for my mom last Christmas, this model came out on top for our requirements. If you are looking for a slow cooker (or need a second one that is good for travel), this is a great buy at a very reasonable price. **Update: I just noticed the slow cooker pictured above is currently out of stock, so I updated the link to a slightly newer model with even better reviews than mine and most of the same features. Sorry for any confusion!**

Green Cupcake Liners (40 count): If cupcakes are in your game plan, these are a lovely green that contrast perfectly against a chocolate cake or frosting. I plan to use a set for our Super Bowl party this weekend, and I absolutely love the shade of green!

Football Cookie Cutter: Quick and easy way to stay on theme &ndash Multiple sizes available.

Football Cake Pan: Wilton is known for well-made baking supplies, so I can&rsquot imagine this to be any different. The cakes look on the small side, but are super cute.

Football Party Food – Game Day Snack Recipes

    1. Pigs in a Blanket – Super easy to make– wrap cocktail sausages with crescent roll dough and bake. Or you can buy a box of ready to heat ones, spread on a baking tray and pop them in the oven. Serve with a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce.

    2. Cheeseburger Sliders – Mini burgers are the perfect appetizer for any party. They go especially great with football and beer!

    3. Bacon and Guacamole Deviled Eggs. An unconventional snack idea that will score big points with your party guests. Mix crumbled bacon with avocado and cilantro and fill hard boiled egg halves. Delicious!

    4. BBQ Chicken Flatbread Pizzas – Flatbread is one of my favorite things to make when I’m hosting a crowd. These have a rustic, smoky flavor from the bacon and barbecue sauce. Switch out the barbecue sauce for buffalo wing sauce to make a spicier version.

    5. Italian Sub Slices- When you’ve got a big crowd to feed and little time to cook you can’t go wrong with a giant sub. Layer on the cold cuts, cheese and veggies. A dash of hot pepper sauce, salt and pepper. Slice it up and serve.

    6. Taco Stuffed Peppers – My husband loves these! Slice off the tops of mini sweet peppers. Remove seeds and stuff with taco seasoned ground beef and cheese. Bake just until the cheese is perfectly melted. Top with a little sour cream and jalapeno and enjoy!

How do you celebrate the Super Bowl? Hosting a big party at your place or just vegging out with the family and a few good eats? Leave us a comment or post on our Facebook page.

Let’s talk team spirit! Because what’s the fun of being a die-hard fan if you can’t show off your team colors on game day and every other day of the week.

How to throw a last-minute Super Bowl party

Maybe you thought you didn’t really care about the Super Bowl.

Maybe you thought that one of your friends would put together an awesome party, but no one did.

Or, maybe you just want an excuse to throw a party.

Whatever your situation, we are here to help you put together a last-minute Super Bowl party that is sure to rock the world of you and your party guests.

Since you don’t have time for too many extras, let’s focus attention on the must-haves for a successful Super Bowl party.

What You Need for Your Last-Minute Super Bowl Party

    1. Solid TV and Seating

Obviously, a TV plays a major role in your Super Bowl party.

You don’t need to have a huge flat-screen (though, honestly that would be great). You just need to make sure that the TV is situated so that everyone can see it.

Sometimes, removing items from your home is necessary in order to make room for the viewing party. If this is the case for you, give Closetbox a call. Our hassle-free valet storage service will come and pick up whatever you need to get out of the way, and then bring it back once the party is over.

If you have multiple TVs to use for your party, that’s even better. You can bring them into the watching area so that everyone is guaranteed to see, or you can set up different viewing rooms — how fun!

Or, you can try this hack from Caleb Backe, Health and Wellness Expert for Maple Holistics : set up a computer or two to watch if multiple TVs are not an option.

Whether you’re watching the game on a giant flat-screen TV or on a few different computers, you want to make sure the sound is top-notch.

And with something as small and simple as the JBL Pulse 3 , you’ll get that great sound without the hassle of a bunch of cords and mess.

With the Pulse 3, you’re able to connect more than 100 JBL Connect + enabled speakers with the push of one button. And, its 12-hour battery life ensures that the great sound lasts throughout the entire game (just be sure you remember to charge it ahead of time!).

And you’ll love this added bonus: the Boombox is IPX7 waterproof, so no need to stress about beer spills.

    2. Food

It’s hard to determine whether more people attend a Super Bowl party for the game, or for the food.

Whether food is their number one priority, or not so important, your Super Bowl party guests are going to be digging into snacks at some point, so you want to make sure your food is on-point.

And, since your party is last-minute, you don’t have time to mess around with complicated foods.

Simplicity is key here, and Chef John Currence, author of two cookbooks and winner of the James Beard Award for Best Chef in the South, shared with us some fabulous Super Bowl recipes that are quick and easy to whip up, and are sure to please your guests.

    Bourbon Apple Glazed Chicken Wings

    • 2 pounds chicken wings, trimmed
    • 1 cup Maker’s Mark Bourbon
    • 1 can frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed
    • ½ cup soy sauce
    • ¼ cup cider vinegar
    • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
    • 4 large cloves of garlic, minced
    • 1 tsp salt
    • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper
    • 1 T. maple syrup
    1. Combine all ingredients in medium pot
    2. Bring to a boil on high heat and reduce to a simmer for 30-40 minutes until wings are tender and the glaze has reduced, coating the wings
    3. Preheat the oven to 325 F
    4. Remove wings from the pot and transfer to a parchment lined sheet tray
    5. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the wings begin to color and glaze becomes shiny
    6. Garnish with minced scallions and apple

Grilled Ham and Pimento Cheese Sandwich

    • ⅔ cup pimento cheese
    • 4 thick slices sourdough or whole wheat bread
    • 4 thin slices pit-smoked ham
    • 4 slices cooked bacon
    • 10-12 dill pickle slices
    • 4 thin slices heirloom or hot house tomato
    • ½ cup slaw
    • ¼ cup unsalted butter
    1. Spread pimento cheese evenly on bread slices
    2. On the bottom bread slices, place the ham, then bacon, pickles, tomato, and slaw
    3. Top with remaining bread
    4. Melt 2 T butter in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until it bubbles
    5. Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bottoms are browned
    6. Add remaining 2 T butter, then flip the sandwiches and cook
    7. Remove sandwiches from the pan, and serve

The options are almost unlimited when it comes to food for your Super Bowl party, but the more finger-friendly the food is, the better.

“Also provide typical snacks like chips and popcorn,” advises Backe.

No one wants to be messing with forks and knives when the game starts to get intense!

Brian Worley of Bold Catering & Design loves “the idea of taking the pressure off of yourself as the host by creating a buffet of sorts. You could create a ‘Do-it-Yourself’ station for just about anything, including: Nachos, Mexican Pizzas, Chili. Also, a Crock-pot or slow cooker can be your best friend on Super Bowl Sunday. Throw all the ingredients into the pot, turn it on and let it cook.”

But, if you really aren’t feeling the cooking vibe, you can always hire catering, or order take-out. The options for that are fabulous, and are entirely stress-free so that you don’t have to deal with any level of cooking on your own.

    3. Drinks

Almost as important as the food at your Super Bowl party will be the drinks.

The first thing you need to make sure of with your drink options is that you have both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

“While there are some who will want to get in the mood with beer [and other alcohol], there will also be some who don’t want to wake up hungover the next morning, so provide options for both,” insider Backe shared with us.

And we could not agree more.

Beer is an absolute must, but so are non-alcoholic drinks.

Be sure you don’t just opt for boring water — for those guests who are choosing not to drink, provide them with some sparkling water, or something that has a bit more flavor to it than plain old water (though you certainly want to have some of that, too).

And, we can count on Chef John Currence to have a fabulous drink recipe as well.

    Touchdown Punch Bowl

    • 1 cup Maker’s Mark Bourbon
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • Peels of 3 lemons and 1 orange
    • Juice of peeled fruit
    • 1 liter of strong tea (preferably green)
    • 250 mL Champagne
    • Freshly grated nutmeg
    1. Combine sugar and citrus peels in the bottom of a punch bowl.
    2. Muddle together until sugar starts to clump
    3. Let sit for about 2 hours
    4. Brew the tea for about 30 minutes
    5. Remove loose tea or tea bags and allow to cool
    6. Add the juice of the peeled fruit, tea, and bourbon
    7. Stir
    8. Top with Champagne right before serving and stir
    9. Top with freshly grated nutmeg

To take some of the stress (and cost) off of you, you can ask your guests to bring some of their favorite drinks either for themselves, or to share with others.

    4. Entertainment

Sure, the Super Bowl is the center of the party, but what about those people who want to come to the party but just aren’t into football? And what about the downtime that can sometimes happen when the game gets boring?

It’s a good idea to have board games and card games on hand for your guests to grab when they’re starting to get a bit bored.

See — it’s not that bad. You can put together a last-minute Super Bowl party with very little effort. We bet you could even do this in a matter of few hours, if necessary.

So step away from the stress, and put together a simple party that will ensure you and your guests have a blast.

    Super Bowl Count Down

The countdown to Super Bowl Sunday has begun. Here at Style Elevator, we love a Super Bowl party as much as we love the football.
