These staples are fantastic on their own, but together they create a harmony you won’t be able to get enough of. You can, quite honestly, use your Italian seasoning in place of any dried herbs called for in a recipe.

Making your own seasonings just make sense. It’s easy and you know exactly what’s in them. Italian seasoning is one I reach for over and over again. It has the perfect balance of earthy, sweet, and savory flavors. It blends beautifully with so many dishes from potatoes, chicken, beef, fish, vegetables and even bread.

Italian seasoning is one of the best of the seasoning blends out there. Having a good blend on hand speeds up your cooking. You don’t have to measure out multiple seasonings. It’s all together in a nice little package. It also takes all the guesswork out of how much spice to add to a dish to make it balanced. The Italian Seasoning blend is already balanced for you. You are going to love having this staple in your pantry! If you’re a fan of Italian seasoning you’ll notice this is the classic herb only version. Often you’ll see it with garlic and onion powder and even red pepper flakes added. Which is delicious, but I wanted to be able to control the amount of those ingredients more depending on the recipe.

Just popping in today for a quick post on something I recently just made out of necessity — Italian seasoning!

I realize that Italian seasoning falls in the category of those generic seasoning blends that “real cooks” claim to never use, such as seasoned salt and lemon pepper. But you know what? I use them all the time. Proudly.

Heck yes! Those dollar-bin seasonings were a big part of how I learned to cook back in the day. They were quick, reliable, and darned affordable when I wanted to try seasoning a chicken breast for dinner instead of ordering take-out. And even today if I’m whipping up a quick soup or my favorite flatbread or even if I just want to add some extra flavor to a pizza, I will still happily reach for a jar of Italian seasonings in a heartbeat. Because let’s be honest, when you’re in a hurry, who really wants to get out the marjoram, and the oregano, and the thyme, and the basil, and….

Well, actually the other day I did. Because when I reached for my trusty jar to make a quick Italian salad dressing (for a salad coming on Monday!), it was basically empty. So I decided to pull out all of the spices that were listed on the container and figure out how to whip up some Italian seasonings of my own. So today I thought I’d share my findings with you.

I will admit, it’s definitely easiest to just buy this stuff at the store. But if you ever find yourself in a pinch, or even if you’d just like to tinker with the specific spice amounts or make a batch with better-quality spices, then you can give it a try. Ahem — proudly give it a try, because there’s no Italian Seasoning Shame on this blog. )

I will note that I chose to make a recipe that is based off of the classic Italian seasoning blends, which is just straight dried herbs. Some of the more gourmet seasoning blends also add in things like garlic powder, onion powder, and/or crushed red pepper flakes (which I love!). But I like adding those separately, so that I can control exactly how much goes into a specific recipe.

i think it's really good because these herbs are really tasty and you don't need any salt, but if you use fresh herbs it will be more delicious. i'm italian, from naples, and belive me on my balcony there are a lot of fresh hebs ready to use. P.S. sorry for my english - 4/9/10

My adopted aunt, my sister's God-Mother, was 2nd generation Sicilian & she NEVER bought seasoning blends. This is so close to a blend she made it might be the same. People think my spaghetti sauce has a secret ingredient (2 Bay leaves). In the crock pot, the spices will combine to scent the house! - 1/20/11


Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, until well combined. If you prefer a finer consistency, you can pulse your Italian seasoning in a spice grinder or food processor take a mortar and pestle to it or grind it up with the back of a spoon or drinking glass.

Once you're satisfied with the consistency, you're all set! Use your Italian seasoning immediately, or store it in an air-tight container until you need it. Just be sure to label the container, so you don't mix it up with another spice blend.

This recipe makes 10 tablespoons (just under 2/3 cup) of Italian seasoning as written, but it's easily scaled. Just maintain the ratio in the recipe, and you can make as much or as little as you need. To maintain freshness, aim to make no more than you can use in six months.

What is in Italian Seasoning?

Here’s what you need to make your own homemade Italian seasoning blend. Use dried:

  • oregano
  • basil
  • rosemary
  • thyme
  • marjoram
  • sage

What’s a good substitute for Italian seasoning?

I think this recipe is a great substitute, but if you don’t have all the herbs listed, just make a blend using what you do have!

What is in McCormick Italian Seasoning?

McCormick calls for the same herbs, but they also add savory. I personally never have savory on hand, so I made up this blend without it!

Does Italian Seasoning Have Fennel?

No, and while some Italian seasoning blends also contain garlic, onion, and salt, mine doesn’t contain any of those. If you like those flavors, certainly add them to your mix!

How to Make Homemade Italian Seasoning

This spice mix couldn’t be simpler:

  1. Measure your herbs into a glass jar.
  2. Shake well.
  3. Use as directed in your favorite recipes!

Is Italian seasoning the same as Italian herbs?

No – Italian herbs make up Italian seasoning. They’re close, but not exactly the same.

Is Italian seasoning gluten-free?

Yes! There’s no gluten in these herbs, and nothing else added to this recipe.

I like to use Italian seasoning on roasted potatoes, but it’s really good on any roasted vegetable or even on rice or chicken!

Guys, you totally want to go easy on the seasoning, so start with less than you think you need and add more to taste. I recommend you start with a teaspoon of seasoning for a recipe that serves 2-4 the first time and then adjust up or down to your taste.
