Again, in honor of Mad Men's season finale and the most beloved redhead on TV — Joan Harris — New York City's Whiskey Blue has created a sultry yet sweet summer cocktail. And yes, it's a redhead, too.
- 3 medium strawberries
- 4 lemon quarters
- 1/4 Ounce simple syrup
- 1 1/2 Ounce Hennessy VSOP
Strawberry Smash Cocktail
The concept for this cocktail came to me in a flash of brilliance (or desperation?) around 5 o’clock last Friday. I’m sure it has been done before, but it’s delightfully simple and postworthy nonetheless.
I must warn you that this drink is dangerously delicious I took a sip, snapped some photos, and slurped it right down. Cheers!
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
- 1 cup strawberry-flavor soda
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ½ cup whiskey, such as Jack Daniel's
- 1 750 milliliter bottle sparkling dry white wine, such as Prosecco, chilled
- 2 cups sparkling water, chilled
- Sliced fresh strawberries (optional)
In a medium bowl combine 1 cup sliced strawberries, soda, lime juice, and sugar. Cover and chill for 1 to 24 hours, stirring occasionally. Slightly crush berries with a muddler or fork. If desired, strain crushed strawberries discard seeds.
Transfer strawberry mixture to a pitcher. Stir in whiskey. Cover and chill for 15 minutes.
Before serving, slowly pour sparkling wine and sparkling water into strawberry mixture in pitcher stir gently to mix. Serve in champagne flutes. If desired, garnish with additional sliced strawberries.

Ahhh.. I am so excited! The weekend that I’ve been waiting for 3 months for is finally here! I’m heading to the Food Photography Workshop hosted by the beautiful Sarah from Broma Bakery and I cannot wait.
So I’m celebrating by sharing a sweet new strawberry smash cocktail with you!
Cocktails are literally my new favorite thing to make for the blog and I have a ton that I’ve made recently and shot that are in the queue waiting to be posted to the blog.
Will you be mad at me if some of my summer cocktails end up being posted in the fall? Or should I just wait to post them next summer?
Meh… we’ll see what happens.
I hate having recipes waiting in the queue for more than a month or two (unless they’re super seasonal) because then it just doesn’t feel as authentic when I post them.
Anyway, this weekend is my first food photography workshop and I could not be more excited. I’ve been feeling a little stagnant lately in my photography.
Obviously not in the cocktail department… I mean, just look at that gorgeousness. Haha
But in the savory and dessert department. I used to feel really confident shooting cookies and not I just feel blah.
Same with all the dinners I make for the family that end up here also. I just feel like all the styling is looking the same and I just need a little refresh.
I need to be around other creatives and photographers and watch and learn from other people. I think it’s nice to learn from others and see their creative thought process.
Plus I get to get out of the house for a few days and have some girl time with my good friend, Mary!

Special Diet Notes: Strawberry Smash Muffins
By ingredients, this recipe is dairy-free / non-dairy, nut-free, peanut-free, soy-free, and vegetarian.
For egg-free strawberry smash muffins, you can substitute egg replacer for the eggs.
For vegan strawberry smash muffins, use the egg replacer option and swap agave nectar for the honey.
For gluten-free strawberry smash muffins, you can substitute your favorite gluten-free all-purpose baking flour for the flour, but I recommend using eggs, rather than egg replacer, if possible.
Using a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon, mash two 1/2" lime wedges, two 1/2" rounds of cucumber, 1 fresh hulled strawberry, 1 Tbsp. Simple Syrup (click for recipe), and 1/2 tsp. balsamic vinegar in a 16-oz. mixing glass or a cocktail shaker 4–5 times just to release juices and oils. Add 1/4 cup gin. Transfer to an Old Fashioned glass. Fill halfway with crushed ice, stir, then mound more crushed ice on top. Garnish with a cucumber round.

Strawberry Whiskey Smash Recipe
Whiskey, scotch, bourbon and whisky (without an) e all suffer from the same problem.
If you are served a cheap, poor quality version the first time you are served one of those spirits, it’s easy to assume that they are all horrible, nose-wrinkling, throat-scorching liquors that taste faintly like what you would assume paint thinner tastes like.
However, good whiskeys (scotches and bourbons, too) don’t deserve to be lumped in with the swill. A good whiskey has a pleasant taste with no harsh after bite, and can be nicely blended into a perfectly sippable cocktail.
So I wanted to create a whiskey-based cocktail recipe that even non-whiskey drinkers would enjoy, to help convert those of you who may have been “burned” by a bad whiskey.
Also, many people are intimidated by whiskey – they are told there are “right” and “wrong” ways to enjoy it (and of course, there are always the purists who insist that it should never be altered), but this cocktail is going to set the record straight and bring both whiskey drinkers and those on the fence together over a glass. (Except for the purists – but they are never any fun at parties anyways…)
The original Whiskey Smash was created by Jerry Thomas in 1862 in his Bar-tenders Guide, as a hybrid between a whiskey sour and a mint julep.
This Strawberry Whiskey Smash is inspired by Dale DeGroff’s version which he served in the 80s at the Rainbow Room (at Rockefeller Center – made infamous in Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential).
Our Strawberry Whiskey Smash is refreshing, with a perfect sweet and tart balance.
What kind of whiskey is best for a whiskey smash? Any whiskey that you enjoy will be great in this recipe – but there’s no need to use the top shelf stuff. (I love Laphroaig when I’m just sipping my whiskey, but I would find it way too expensive to include in a cocktail.) I tend to use Jameson when making whiskey cocktails because it’s super smooth and the price point is perfect. You can also make this recipe with gin, vodka or rum.
Can I use mint extract in place of the fresh mint? Yes, but I’d personally skip the mint if you had to use an extract. Mint extract could easily overpower this cocktail, and it lacks the complexity of real mint (which is grassy, fresh, and slightly sweet).
Do I have to use simple syrup in a whiskey smash? No – you can use maple syrup or honey, however it will slightly change the taste of your cocktail. Some people like adding powdered sugar, but personally I’d rather use a syrup/liquid sweetener to avoid a gritty texture and to ensure that the cocktail is perfectly consistent.

1. Trim the ends from the strawberries, and wash clean. 2. Cut into quarters, then chop. 3. On the stovetop in a medium saucepan, add chopped strawberries to 1 1/4 cups of water (or enough to cover - strawberries vary in size), and bring to a boil. 4. Once at a boil, reduce to medium-low heat, and simmer for 20 minutes. 5. Remove any foam that may collect on the surface of the mixture. 6. Using a fine-meshed colander or sieve placed over a bowl, strain strawberries to collect the juice, which should be roughly 1 cup total. Discard spent berries. 7. Return the juice to the saucepan on the stove, and add 1 cup of sugar.
8. Bring to a boil, and stir to dissolve. Once the sugar is dissolved, remove pan from heat and allow to cool before use. Strawberry simple syrup will keep, refrigerated, for 3-4 days.
For assembling the cocktail:
1. In an empty shaker, gently muddle mint to release its flavorful essential oils, then add chopped strawberries. 2. Add ice to shaker, then add vodka, and strawberry syrup.
2. Shake to combine.
3. Pour contents of shaker into a Collins glass or a mason jar, leaving room for a float of Prosecco (
4. Garnish with a strawberry wedge, a sprig of mint, and an eco-friendly straw.
